YouTube Now in Closed Captioning

YouTube Now in Closed Captioning

Closed Captioning is now available on all YouTube videos thanks to Ken Harrenstien, the lead engineer behind the technology who is hearing impaired himself. Google began it’s closed captioning technology in beta back in November 2009.

While viewing a video, if you click the grayish arrow that appears on the bottom right corner, a red “CC” button appears where you can toggle closed captioning on and off.

Although the CC is not perfect, users can edit the transcripts in any text editor and reupload them for others.

Right now CC is only available for English videos but Google hopes to provide captioning in multiple languages.

You can read an interview with Ken Harrenstien here.
